Bat Fest 2021
BAT FEST Rescheduled to 2022!
It is with utter shock and great disappointment that we must announce that we were notified via email at 4:57 pm by the City of Austin (COA) Special Events Program Manager-Austin Center for Events, that our special event permit was denied for this Saturday’s Bat Fest. Therefore we have been strong armed into cancelling our event. We have been in contact with the City since 8/11, continually to communicate and make sure that our event would go on. In fact, this Monday, 8/23, we were emailed by the same COA employee assuring us that we would have the event this Saturday.
Our Covid Safety Plan was approved by the city, APD, AFD, and Austin EMS were scheduled and our site plans were approved. We had received our TABC permits and were notified today by EHSD that our food vendors’ temporary event permits were ready. Even this morning as we measured out booth spaces on Congress Avenue Bridge, we saw COA employees removing the bike lane delineations that the Fire Department wanted removed for Saturday.
Needless to say, all indications from the City of Austin were that we had all of our ducks in a row as we have had for the other 15 previous years for this event. Now at the 11th hour we have been denied our permit and forced to cancel. We are shocked and devastated as this is a huge financial blow and harmful to our reputation as event producers. We know it’s also hard on our ticket holders, our vendors, our bands, etc.
We know many of you have already made travel plans, booked hotels, and that you have spent time and money preparing to attend this event. We feel our event has been singled out arbitrarily and discriminated against. We value and appreciate our customers so we are planning to offer full refunds or the option to transfer your ticket to 2022. We will be in touch with you soon via an email from Front Gate Tickets just as soon as their website changes are ready. This email is expected to be sent out tomorrow, 8/26.
We’re sorry to bring you this unfortunate news and assure you that if there was something we could do to change the circumstances we would. In this case, our livelihood was taken away with a single permit denial just shy of 72 hours prior to the event, a permit we filed for two years ago. This weekend in Austin 20,500 soccer fans are expected to fill Q2 stadium to watch Austin FC – Go Verde! Various other full capacity concerts and performances will be taking place throughout the city both indoors and outdoors. We are glad those events are taking place and we feel that we should have had the chance to go on with ours. It’s unfair to punish small mom and pop businesses like us. It is NOT OKAY.Bands Performing:

IMPORTANT BAT FEST UPDATE:
Due to COVID-19, Toadies have decided to not perform this year. They have agreed to perform in 2022—that event date is 08/27/22. This is obviously unexpected and very close to the event date. We realize that this news will be disappointing to many of you, but we must respect the artists’ concerns. The show will go on without them.
Toadies’ official statement:“It is with sincere disappointment that due to health, safety and travel concerns for our band and crew we must announce that Toadies will not be playing Bat Fest scheduled for August 28th in Austin, TX. This was a difficult decision as we are confident that Bat Fest organizers are taking the situation seriously. Thanks for understanding and we hope to see y’all sooner than later.”
Bun B is now not available to perform the event and has been replaced. Bun B has agreed to perform on the 2022 Bat Fest.
What will you see at Bat Fest this year? 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerging from under the bridge at dusk, 2 stages with live music, arts & crafts vendors, delicious food and drinks, and a bat costume contest.
Location: Congress Ave Bridge & Austin American Statesman Parking Lot

Let Your friends know you are going:
Dear Bat Fest Patrons,
Bat Fest is a reduced capacity event this year meaning tickets will be limited to ensure more space for social distancing for our attendees. We have also limited vendors and removed the carnival to create more space for people to spread out. Bat Fest is going to take place on August 28, 2021. We will be following the guidelines of the City of Austin at the time of the event. These are constantly changing. Currently masks are not required outdoors, but strongly encouraged. We will have masks available if you do not have your own. You are also asked to stay home if you are running a temperature over 100.4. We will have temperature scanners available if you think you might have a temperature upon arrival. Whenever possible social distance. We will also have hand sanitizer throughout the event, so use as needed. We will also be wiping down regularly touched items like portable toilets. If you don’t have your vaccine and would like to get one, Austin Public Health will be setup offering free vaccines on location!
Thanks for working with us to make this a safe event!
